You are in control of Nate a man dressed in green pajamas, who climbs a strange and surreal mountain one awkward step at a time. This journey is not purely about climbing to the top, but is instead a meditative, often humorous experience in this struggle to put one foot in front of the other.
What is Baby Steps?
In Baby Steps you are going to walk. You directly control the legs of a man named Nate who is on a self-imposed “personal retreat”. Every single step is a distinct physical relationship with reality. Because of this each step creates a core puzzle in locomotion. The game promotes the absurdity of this mindless task. You are going to trip, fall, slip, and stumble, all while exploring an oddly beautiful landscape. It is a game about the journey and the small victories found in the act of walking itself.
Gameplay:
The gameplay focuses on manipulating your legs through the mouse or the triggers on the controller. You lift each leg high, and with each step you drop your foot down firmly as if trying to stomp into the ground, resulting in an intended feel of awkwardness and a sense of rhythm. Moving through uneven terrain with slopes and obstacles requires you to think strategically about how to balance your weight and move altogether. If you misstep at the wrong moment, you will fall down a hill and lose all your progress made during that trip.
